Housing Justice

Home is where our lives unfold, where memories are made, where relationships take shape. A safe and stable home is the foundation of the life most of us want; it’s the backdrop for raising our families, caring for our elders and contributing for our communities.

Unfortunately we live in a country where our housing systems are driven by the greed of a powerful few for endless profit, rather than centering the basic need we all have for shelter and stability.

Wall Street landlords are buying up our homes and charging us more than half of our paycheck to just have somewhere to sleep, let alone grow. Meanwhile, home ownership is becoming a rare prize only for the rich, with prices that are out of reach for the majority. The corporations, giant landlords, luxury developers, and others making billions off our backs use this money to pay certain politicians to do their bidding. They also attempt to divide and distract us based on what we look like, where we come from, or how long we’ve lived in our neighborhood.

Public Advocates believes that when we join together and unite to change these unjust systems, we can make sure that everyone who wants to make California home has a healthy, affordable place to live, and that our communities are places for people to thrive, not playgrounds for the wealthy to squeeze us for ever more profit.
