Renters’ Rights

Everyone in our state—the fifth largest global economy—deserves a safe, healthy home. Our neighbors who rent in lower income communities need stronger laws and protections from displacement due to rising rents, evictions or gentrification.

Public Advocates works in deep collaboration with grassroots organizations to advocate for strong renter protections at the local, regional, and state levels. We focus on winning meaningful anti-displacement policies that guarantee affordable rent, stop arbitrary evictions, prevent abuse and harassment, require healthy rental housing, and provide fairness and access to justice during the eviction process. Our goal is to support renters to organize and build power, and to ensure renters from marginalized or historically disadvantaged communities know and can enforce their legal rights.
