Public Advocates continues to convene a coalition of state advocacy and legal services organizations to fight for improvements to the state affirmatively furthering fair housing implementation and enforcement.
In 2017, Public Advocates worked with the San Mateo Anti-Displacement Coalition (SMADC) and other groups to push for a strong analysis in the region’s first Assessment of Fair Housing — a new, more robust analysis required by the 2015 federal regulation on affirmatively furthering fair housing.
As part of the Oakland Community Investment Alliance (OCIA) Public Advocates fought for and won a strong housing impact fee on new market-rate development to help fund affordable housing. Between August 2014 and March 2016, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Oakland increased by 40%.
Together, we will ensure that our movement can take on tomorrow’s challenges.
