Frustrated with a lack of solutions to Gilroy’s low-income housing shortage, Public Advocates and its partners filed a lawsuit against the City of Gilroy on behalf of low-income residents. The suit alleged that Gilroy’s housing policies exacerbated the housing crisis and discriminated against the city’s large Latino community.
With our coalition partners, Public Advocates made real progress in the fight for affordable housing in the low-income community of Pittsburg. Our suit, backed by grassroots and coalition advocacy, persuaded the City Council to accommodate the need for lower-income housing in its amended General Plan, and to adopt the Housing Element of that Plan through a transparent public process.
Together, we will ensure that our movement can take on tomorrow’s challenges.
