San Francisco, CA — Public Advocates strongly condemns the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, a 1973 landmark decision that for nearly 50 years has recognized a constitutional right to abortion. This unprincipled ruling threatens a range of fundamental protections and weakens our rights to privacy. In a true democracy all women, workers, LGBTQI+ communities, immigrants and people of color have access to equal political and reproductive rights — including the right to control their own health and bodies. Today’s attack on reproductive rights disproportionately harms and criminalizes persons who have already been historically excluded from full access to abortion and reproductive healthcare. The constitutional right to an abortion was recognized after decades of struggle and unspeakable suffering by generations of women. It is fundamental to our democracy and must be restored.

As a law firm and advocacy organization, Public Advocates has used the law and our justice system throughout our 50-year history to secure and uphold equal rights for women, workers, and disenfranchised communities including access to prenatal care services for undocumented immigrants, consumer protections for nursing mothers, and equal employment opportunities. While we feel deep sadness and rage in this moment, the fight is not over: We stand in solidarity with our partners who lead in this work and the millions of voices across our country demanding that Congress and state leaders take immediate action to not only restore the right to abortion, but to affirmatively expand the economic and political rights of all women and persons who need full reproductive autonomy.
