September 14, 2017 – Sonali Kohli and Howard Blume of the Los Angeles Times cover the $150 million settlement with LAUSD. The settlement arises from a 2015 lawsuit filed by Public Advocates, the ACLU Foundation of Southern California and Covington & Burling LLP on behalf of Reyna Frias and the Community Coalition. The lawsuit alleged that LAUSD was improperly reducing its obligation towards high-need students by crediting itself every year for some $450 million spent on special education services that were actually part of the district’s basic educational program.
