A coalition of a dozen community and labor organizations, including Public Advocates, pushed successfully for affordable housing goals, anti-displacement protections, local hiring, accessible and affordable transit and other community benefits in the East Oakland Coliseum Area Specific Plan.
The planning commission also denied a strong request from many neighbors and community groups to raise the goal for affordable housing to more than 15 percent. “That’s nowhere near enough,” said David Zisser of Public Advocates. “It doesn’t reflect the needs of the community, where 50 percent of the people are low- and very-low income.”
