Meet Our 2015 Summer Interns

Public Advocates is thrilled to introduce this summer’s fantastic group of interns! This year we have a very fun, active group who has been contributing in all areas of law or non-profit work in and outside of the office. Take a moment to read their stories and find out what they’re up to when they’re not working hard!

Summer 2015 Com/Dev Intern Bios

Madison Kelley
Madison Kelley is a rising sophomore at Wellesley College in Boston, where she plans to major in Media Arts and Sciences. During high school Madison sat on the board of the Vegas PBS Women’s Engagement Council, which focuses on raising awareness for human trafficking and the need to better young girls’ general health and wellness. She is very excited about her internship as it presents an opportunity for her to see what the world of law looks like up close. In her free time she enjoys reading books by Haruki Murakami, trying new restaurants, and shopping.

Giulia Mazza
Giulia moved to San Francisco from Italy in October 2014. Since coming to the Bay Area, she has been volunteering for several non-profit organizations and has discovered a strong passion for social justice, social issues, gender issues and healthcare. She also enjoys doing yoga, biking and hiking and the Bay Area is the perfect place!

Grant Raffel
Grant Raffel is a rising junior at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, where he is a Political Science major. He is interested in a career in law and public service. Grant is looking forward to contributing at Public Advocates this summer as a Communications and Development Intern. He cannot wait to help broadcast the amazing work going on at Public Advocates. When he is not busy working, Grant competes for the Williams College Men’s Golf Team.

Ava Rezai
Ava Rezai is a rising junior at the University of California, Santa Barbara where she is double majoring in Global & International Studies and Religious Studies with Honors. Her dedication to Model United Nations simply confirmed her drive to reach a career in international law and diplomacy. In her free time, Ava enjoys indoor cycling, attending music festivals, and re-watching The Office episodes.

Summer 2015 Education Equity Team Law Clerk Bios

Calleigh Durr

Calleigh Durr is a rising 2L at University of Colorado Law. She graduated from Regis University in Denver, Colorado, where she majored in Political Science and minored in Economics and Sociology. At Colorado Law, Calleigh is the co-president of the school’s chapter of the National Lawyers Guild and is active in the Public Interest Student’s Association and the Women’s Law Caucus. Outside of law school, Calleigh is an avid runner and also enjoys hiking and watching Kansas Jayhawks basketball.

Bruna Estrada
Bruna Estrada is a rising 2L and Gates Public Service Law Scholar at the University of Washington School of Law. At UW Law, Bruna is co-president of the Education Law and Policy Society. She also works with survivors of domestic violence applying for a U Visa with the Immigrant Families Rights Project. Outside of law school, Bruna volunteers for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers promoting STEM education and with the Latino Bar Association of Washington assisting in their free local legal clinics.

Matthew Sellers
Matthew Sellers is a rising 2L at Stanford Law School.  He graduated from the University of Georgia in 2012 with an A.B. in English. As a Marshall Scholar, he obtained a master’s degree in English literature from the University of Oxford. At Stanford, Matthew serves as Academic Committee Co-Chair for the American Constitution Society and as a Senior Editor for the Stanford Journal for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties.  He was also involved with Stanford’s Social Security pro bono project. In his spare time, Matthew plays the piano and enjoys reading biography and postcolonial literature.

Francis Yao 
Francis Yao is a rising 3L at the University of California, Irvine School of Law from the Bay Area. He graduated from the University of California, Davis, where he majored in economics and having a good time. At UCI Law School, Francis is chairperson of the Student Bar Association. He has shown devotion to public service through over 150 pro bono hours. He has worked with organizations such as Public Counsel, the Mississippi Center for Justice, and the American Civil Liberties Union of San Diego. Outside of law school, Francis enjoys embarking on food adventures, playing competitive badminton, and reading fantasy novels.

Summer 2015 Metro Equity Team Law Clerk Bios

Max Alderman
Max Alderman is a rising 2L at Stanford Law School. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Nevada-Reno with a B.A. in Philosophy and Political Science. At Stanford, Max is the executive editor of the Stanford Journal of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, the co-president of OutLaw, and a member of the Asylum Assistance Pro Bono. Outside the classroom, he enjoys contemporary art, performing in drag, theater, LGBTQ activism, reading Ishiguro novels, and eating massive amounts of cookies.

Jenna Kingkade
Jenna Kingkade is a rising 2L at Berkeley Law, where she is involved in student activism around tuition increases and issues of transparency and inclusivity.  She is active in graduate student government and was elected President of the UC Berkeley Graduate Assembly (representing 10,000 graduate students). She is currently working with other students to revitalize the Berkeley Law chapter of the National Lawyers Guild.

Katie McKeon
Katie McKeon is a rising 2L at Stanford Law School. She graduated from Stanford University with a Major in History with a specific focus on American legal and racial history. After graduating, Katie moved to Washington, D.C., to work as a paralegal at Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll. Katie was excited to return to the Stanford community again as the Lead Notes Editor for the Stanford Law and Policy Review journal, a lead coordinator for the Housing Pro Bono program, and an executive board member of the Stanford Latino Law Students Association (SLLSA). Outside of law school, Katie likes to play on any sports team that she can find, going to the movies and reading historical fiction novels.
