Statement by Public Advocates on Draft SCOTUS Opinion Overturning Roe v. Wade
Public Advocates vehemently condemns the draft opinion written by Justice Alito, which if finalized, would overturn Roe v. Wade, eviscerate the constitutional right to abortion, and threaten a range of other fundamental protections grounded in the constitutional right to privacy. This unprincipled opinion by the Supreme Court is an appalling attack on the reproductive and political rights of women and will disproportionately harm and criminalize persons who already lack full access to abortion and reproductive healthcare, including Black and brown women living in poverty and members of the LGBTQI+ community. The constitutional right to an abortion – a right that was recognized after decades of struggle and unspeakable suffering by generations of women – is fundamental and must be protected.
Throughout its 50-year history, Public Advocates has advocated for the equal rights of women, including equal access to prenatal care services for undocumented immigrants, consumer protections for nursing mothers, and equal employment opportunities. We join with the millions of voices across the U.S. demanding that Congress and state leaders take immediate action to not only defend the right to abortion, but to affirmatively expand the economic and political rights of women and all persons who need full reproductive autonomy.
