Public Advocates Statement on Renter Funding in May Budget Revision
Statement by Legislative Counsel Andrés Ramos:
“We are very pleased that Governor Newsom has made protecting renters a top priority in the May Budget Revision. A just and rapid recovery for California depends on protecting renters from eviction, guaranteeing that they are free from rent and utility debt, and ensuring that their future credit is not impacted. We strongly support the state’s commitment to invest the full amount of funding needed to achieve these goals.
We encourage the Administration to work with renters and advocates to get the details right so that no renter is left behind. It is also critical that the state expand and extend the statewide eviction moratorium set to expire on June 30 to give renters time to access financial assistance programs.
With financial resources coupled with strong policies, we can make sure that all California renters emerge from the pandemic with a stable home.”
