After I began asking about my child’s academic progress and attending board meetings to ask about bylaws and transparency, I was prohibited from going to my daughter’s charter school for 6 days. This retaliation shook me to my core.
AB 967 Background
AB 967, sponsored by Assemblymember Christy Smith, will make sure that charter schools have the same accountability and community engagement standards as other public schools. If signed into law, you’ll see all charter schools in California post their budgets and spending plans online, engage parents through a committee process, and consult with parents of English learners.
The bill comes off the heels of a report we published that uncovered a massive failure on the part of charters to be transparent about how they spend millions of taxpayer dollars to benefit high need students.
In a recent blog post, we take you behind the scenes of a day at the Capitol with parents of charter school students advocating for AB 967.
Status of bill: On July 1, the bill was placed on the suspense file.
