On May 17, 2016, Public Advocates sent a letter to Oakland Councilmember Abel Guillen on behalf of the Protect Oakland Renters coalition regarding an advice letter that the councilmember received from the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) on April 27th. The FPPC letter concludes that it would be a conflict of interest for Councilmember Guillen to vote on whether to place on the November ballot a “Protect Oakland Renters Act” that would expand rent control and just cause eviction protections. Public Advocates’ letter describes concerns with the FPPC’s analysis and recommends that Councilmember Guillen request that the FPPC reconsider its advice and issue a new letter.
