Public Advocates and the Public Interest Law Project sent a letter on behalf of Eastlake United for Justice, a neighborhood organization of concerned residents who live in Oakland’s Eastlake neighborhood regarding the sale of a City-owned parcel for luxury housing development. The letter outlines the City’s legal obligations for disposing of “surplus land” under state and local laws, including notice and affordable housing requirements, as well as the fair housing implications of using publicly owned land for market-rate housing that would likely perpetuate segregation.
