The Oakland City Council delayed on Tuesday night a vote on the sale of public land in the Lake Merritt neighborhood for a controversial residential tower proposal. The motion kept the project alive, but its fate is increasingly uncertain in the face of fierce opposition from neighborhood groups.
“The Oakland City Council has a unique opportunity to both meet its legal obligations and share its vision for the city that includes people of all incomes and backgrounds,” said David Zisser, staff attorney with Public Advocates, in a statement prior to the meeting. Eastlake United has threatened to challenge the deal in court.
“As responsible stewards of this valuable public land, they must ensure that the East 12th Street development includes badly needed affordable housing,” he said.
