June 11, 2020 – Laura Waxmann of the San Francisco Business Times covers the introduction of AB 1436, a bill co-sponsored by Public Advocates. The bill provides sweeping protections to renters who are suffering from the economic devastation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Managing Attorney Sam Tepperman-Gelfant is quoted:
“We’re seeing the impacts of systemic racism as Black and Brown communities are hit hardest by COVID-19. That same structural racism infects our housing system, and if landlords can kick people out of their homes for rent they were unable to pay during the state of emergency, Black and Brown families will once again bear the brunt.”
