California no longer requires students to pass a high school exit exam to graduate. Thousands of students dating back to 2006 failed the test. This year, because of a law change, these students could get their diplomas but many school districts are making little effort to notify them.

KPCC reporter Adolfo Guzman Lopez reports on efforts to reach out to students who may now obtain a diploma despite having failed the test.

John Affeldt, Managing Attorney at Public Advocates comments in the piece:

“The state is the one that really has put districts and students in this quandry.”
