COVID-19 and Pandemic-Related Housing Resources
Even though California has ended most protections for renters due to COVID-19, as of May 6, 2022, renters still have important legal protections! This fact sheet covers key renter protections that could benefit you. Updated fact sheets in: English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Russian.

Surplus Land Act
The California Surplus Land Act requires that when cities, counties, transit agencies and other local agencies sell or lease their land, they must prioritize it for affordable housing development. Public Advocates has developed a Surplus Land Act flowchart and worked with community partners in Oakland and San Jose to enforce the SLA.
Housing Element Advocacy Toolkits
The Housing Element (an actionable affordable housing plan) process can be a great way to advance existing campaigns and community priorities. These Housing Element advocacy toolkits provide legal, policy, and data arguments, strategic messaging and talking points, and model policies and resources on issues that are at the forefront of many local housing justice advocates.
