Sumeet Bal (she/her/hers) serves as the Director of Communications at Public Advocates and is a member of the organization’s executive management team, where she architects comprehensive narrative strategies and leads media engagement to amplify the organization’s high-impact policy advocacy and litigation initiatives. As the steward of PA’s brand identity and reputation, Sumeet oversees all external communications including the organization’s digital presence, earned media strategy, and stakeholder engagement initiatives. This multi-platform ecosystem includes the organization’s website, social media channels, Substack publication, and an extensive network of media relationships spanning local, regional, and national outlets. Her strategic vision transforms community narratives into powerful catalysts for systemic change, building coalitions and cultivating broad-based support for a more equitable California where every resident can belong and thrive.

A seasoned communications executive with over two decades of experience spanning media relations and nonprofit leadership, Sumeet excels at crafting compelling narratives that drive meaningful change and deliver measurable results. She has established PA as a trusted thought leader through sophisticated brand positioning and message architecture that resonates with diverse audiences across multiple channels.

Prior to her leadership at PA, she spearheaded communications strategy and pioneered groundbreaking research on messaging frameworks for immigrant rights movement building at the California Immigrant Policy Center (CIPC). Her innovative approach to cultural representation and brand elevation was demonstrated through her leadership role in securing and promoting the first-ever Sikh American float in the Rose Bowl Parade, generating unprecedented visibility for the community.

While Sumeet’s career began in journalism at Entertainment Weekly, she developed expertise in strategic storytelling under the mentorship of elite editors from Time, Inc. and The New York Times, as well as producers from The Today Show, ABC, and CBS. Her versatile communications portfolio spans hard news, cultural analysis, and lifestyle coverage across print and broadcast platforms, providing her with a comprehensive understanding of media landscapes and audience engagement that informs her executive-level brand management and communications approach.

Education

Sumeet earned an M.S. in Broadcasting, in 2000, from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and a B.A. in Political Science and Religion from Duke University in 1997.
