Alameda County Renters’ Rights Campaign

About the Campaign

Public Advocates has been supporting My Eden Voice, a grassroots community organization in the unincorporated Eden Area communities of Alameda County, in their fight to bring renter protections to unincorporated Alameda County.

Regardless of where we live, all renters deserve security in their homes. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for the 60,000 renters in unincorporated Alameda County, who have no local tenant protections. My Eden Voice originally attempted to get a tenant protection package passed by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, but the board ultimately failed to move a proposal forward.

Now, Public Advocates has been working with My Eden Voice and their allies to use the Housing Element to uplift the fair housing challenges and demands of renters in unincorporated Alameda County. The Alameda County Housing Element is the County’s affordable housing action plan and the primary document used to assess the housing needs for unincorporated neighborhoods. State Housing Element law requires the county to conduct a thorough and comprehensive analysis of the persistent barriers to housing access and stability, requiring the County to prioritize information from the residents themselves.

Public Advocates is working alongside My Eden Voice to inform Alameda County renters in the unincorporated areas about their rights under state Housing Element law, collaborate on public engagement and participation efforts with the county, and advocate for oversight from California’s state housing agency. In addition, we are working to ensure that the county fulfills its legal obligation to make specific commitments to meaningful renter protection programs which directly address the issues identified by communities of color, low-income renters, and other marginalized groups at risk of displacement.
