Funding Local Transit Service
There is a lack of public funding, particularly operating funding, for public transit service. Federal and state transportation funding programs favor road and highway projects. Within transit funding, elected officials and other decision-makers often prioritize expensive rail capital projects over improving existing transit service, especially bus service. Without additional funding, we will not be able to maintain existing levels of transit service, let alone increase it to the level our communities need.
We advocate to reallocate existing funding and identify new sources for transit operations funding at the regional, state, and federal levels. We prioritize progressive sources of new funding to ensure the burden doesn’t fall on low-income households.
