Sumeet Bal (she/her/hers) is the Director of Communications at Public Advocates where she provides narrative, media, and branding strategy to the organization’s policy advocacy and litigation work. Sumeet’s leadership guides PA’s communications vision to uplift community voices to show the impact of injustice and to build broad based support for a more equitable California where every neighbor, student, worker and senior can belong and thrive.
With over two decades of experience in media and nonprofits, Sumeet is passionate about telling stories, inspiring change, and pushing her potential to get the job done. Before coming to PA, Sumeet led communications strategy and groundbreaking research on messaging for immigrant rights movement building at the California Immigrant Policy Center (CIPC). She was a notable leader on the team responsible for media outreach for the first-ever Sikh American float in the Rose Bowl Parade. Sumeet began her career in journalism at Entertainment Weekly. Mentored by top editors from Time, Inc. and The New York Times, and producers from The Today Show, ABC, and CBS, Sumeet has covered hard news, culture, and fashion for print and broadcast media.
Education
Sumeet earned an M.S. in Broadcasting, in 2000, from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and a B.A. in Political Science and Religion from Duke University in 1997.
